FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT LHS MUSIC
Do I have to audition? What if I just want to play in the non-audition group?
Still audition! I want all my students to strive to be their very best. Besides, you’re all new students to me and hearing all incoming students will help me decide the level of repertoire to choose. It also gives me the great opportunity to meet you.
Does my student have to audition for concert band if they only want to do jazz?
Yes. All students must be signed up for a concert band during the school day. The only exceptions are piano players and guitarists. Bass players must be signed up for an orchestra class.
Which class is the marching band?
Both the non-audition concert band and the wind ensemble will serve as our marching/pep band.
Where are we going to practice marching?
Not sure yet! These are part of the logistics we have to figure out with the space we have. High Schools that have been in the building in the past used the field over at Hamilton or bused down to Memorial Stadium.
Will there be more than one jazz band?
Most likely. However, this will most depend on the number of students interested and the instrumentation we have after the first jazz band is filled.
Will the band/jazz band be going on trips?
Of course! Most of those trips have not been decided just yet as we want to make those decisions as a team. Once we have hired our entire music staff, we will begin to plan our travel plans for next year.
Can I audition on multiple instruments?
Preferably not. Please only sign up for an audition on your main instrument. If you’re a talented multi-instrumentalist, that’s great! I would love to have you perform on multiple instruments. But for the sake of time, please limit yourself to one audition and make your desire to play other instruments known once we get everyone placed
Do I have to be in marching/pep band if I am in a sport?
Yes. We understand there will be conflicts. If you’re on the football team or basketball team, you will not have to play at those events. However, we will still have a presence in our community during pep rallies and parades in which you can participate.
What if I play a non-marching band instrument (oboe or bassoon)?
It is very common for students all around to learn a second instrument. Oboe players often have an easier time learning the saxophone as the fingerings are very similar. Bassoon players have a little harder of a time learning a second instrument since their instrument is so different than that of other woodwinds. Low brass or bari sax are good options for bassoon players as the music is still in bass clef (bari sax easily transposes tuba parts).
Can I play a solo with the orchestra?
Yes! Concertos allow an orchestra to interact with a soloist and learn interactive skills. Set up a time to play your concerto or solo and you might be selected!
Can we play chamber music?
Yes! gather a group of friends or ask people to join you in a duo, trio, quartet, or more. Repertoire help and advice is provided by the Orchestra Director. Solo and ensemble festival coaching is provided to all interested groups too.
Can we play symphony orchestra repertoire with winds, brass, percussion?
Yes! The Band and Orchestra Directors will help create this opportunity, likely through parallel course offering (band and orchestra scheduled in same block) at first, or through before-school rehearsals. When we have enough student interest, a full symphony orchestra class can be created.
Can we request repertoire?
Yes! Orchestra involves collaboration with everyone and the conductor; we'll discuss possibilities and ideas will be welcome.
